NSS 2012: NEW (TO ME) TALENT

Are you ready for a whirlwind wrap up of NSS? Since I am so behind on my recaps, I thought I would break down the remaining booths into two monster posts. So without further ado, follow me to post number one: new talent . . .

Guess what, guys? Today is the last National Stationery Show post! Remember yesterday's whirlwind wrap up? Well today is part two! So strap in, get psyched and click through a big ol' batch of eye candy . . . 

NATIONAL STATIONERY SHOW

On this rainy Tuesday I am headed waaaaaaay across town to check out the National Stationery Show (NSS)! For paper and stationery nerds like me, the NSS is the biggest ticket of the year. The HUGE event plays host to over 900 companies that sell stationery, wrapping supplies, cards, and other supplies. It also attracts the biggest buyers out there, everyone from ABC Home to Kate's Paperie. I am getting giddy just thinking about it!

I plan to take lots of pictures and have lots to tell you this week once I get back. But until then you can see a sneak preview of one of the most anticipated new vendors---Rifle Paper Co.---here and here. STATIONERY LOVE

Something about the holidays approaching always manages to make me want to go out and buy cute stationery (even though I bought all my christmas cards on sale last january). NSS 2011: LADIES, LINDA & HARRIETT, GOLD TEETH

Today I am sharing my last round up about the National Stationery Show. And I can tell you I am ending it on an epic note! First off, I am so excited to show you the (new-to-me) booth: Ladies of Letterpress. They represent a whole bunch of fabulous women who work with paper, but my two favorites were Anemone Press and Heartfish Press. They both have this colorful vibrant style with an emphasis on funky type. Anemone Press has a great series of pun-filled cards (Well done! Ha!) and super fun fluorescent cards. I also love the alphabet cards by Heartfish Press and, did you see her button? Paper obsessed! A girl after my own heart!

I have always liked the funky, cool-kid style rocked by Gold Teeth Brooklyn and this year's booth totally lived up to that bill. Her simple cards that feature different types of paper are my favorite, but I can totally see how wonderful it would be to give her flamingo, sailboat or sled card for a ton of different occasions. And check out how well her booth is decorated! A vintage globe and peonies . . . yup, this is a booth after my own heart!

Last but not least: Linda & Harriett! One of my all-time favorites. The Linda & Harriett booth always looks so clean and fresh (my apologies for the uneven lighting). I love the patterns, the palette, the watercolor . . . everything! I would be so happy to hang one of her calendars on my wall. I mean, really, how could you not smile when you see that adorable October mask pattern?

NSS 2012: LADIES OF LETTERPRESS

On Tuesday I did a marathon run through of the National Stationery Show. I was very impressed with the exhibitors this year—there were tons of amazing new booths and even more wonderful creations by my favorite vendors. This week and into next I will be sharing all the best goods (just like I did here), so stick with me for some serious eye candy! (Also stick with me if my photos are oddly colored or grainy; the lighting stinks in the Javits Center!)





First up is one of my favorite booths: Ladies of Letterpress. LoL (I made have just made that acronym up, ha) is  a group of unbelievably creative ladies who crank out some unbelievably cool stationery. Here where my top picks from their giant booth . . . .







Tella Press is a studio located just a hop, skip and a jump away from me in Brooklyn. I was particularly drawn by the patterns Donatella (the owner and designer) has included in her big, blocky, colorful text. I was also swooning over the graphic wine bottle tags; they would be perfect to tote along to your next summer fete. Learn more about Tella Press here.




    

When I came across the gorgeous stylings of Sixpenny Letterpress, my jaw nearly dropped. There was nothing even remotely like these simple, clean geometries anywhere else in the show, so it is not surprising that everyone was buzzing about Sixpenny. I am particularly in love with their business card (see here) but would also gladly take home everything else in the booth, especially that 'big love' card. Awesome! Pepper Press is another sweet Brooklyn studio run by a super sweet lady named Ursula, who I quickly realized was clearly my kindred spirit. Just look at her designs! They include polka dots (duh, love them), topographical drawings (maps, my fav) and cool architectural drawings (too awesome). Needless to say you need to check out more Pepper Press goodness here.



   



So apparently all of the LoL are just insanely nice and cool because I think I talked Meg, the brilliant mind behind Moglea, for nearly fifteen minutes. She kindly gave me advice on printing techniques and told me all about her work with Minted (another sweet booth I will post about later!) and all around made me feel welcome in an overwhelming sea of stationery. And her work totally mirrors her loveliness, being decked out with gorgeous hand-drawn floral patterns and curlicued typography. Personally, I would buy stacks and stacks of her 'you are so freaking awesome' and 'home is where your mom is' cards. NSS: RECAP, PART ONE

After a super long day yesterday and a bit of recuperation today (fighting a cold!), I am ready to share some of my favorite booths from the National Stationery Show. I won't bore you with all the details of my notes from each vendor, however I will regale you with tons of pictures! I will also highlight some of the most drool-worthy products I noticed . . . many of which I might need to head out and buy ASAP!

Cavallini & Co was the first booth I stopped at and boy did it deliver! Looking around I realized that I recognized nearly every type of product on display as something I own or been tempted to buy before. I have two of their tins of alphabet stamps (perfect for gift tags, notes, etc.) and several of their single sheets of printed paper. Everything they make is bright, graphic and beautifully designed . . . all with a vintage, encyclopedia-like style. Check out their products here and their sellers here.

Bob's Your Uncle did not have a booth of their own. Instead they had an amazing display through their super cool rep and distributor Aesthetic Movement (the A/M booth looked wonderful with its chalkboard walls). The display featured the entire gamut of the Bob's Your Uncle line including the melamine plates, paper goods, luggage tags, coasters, calendars etc. There were a couple of stand outs (some brand new and some new-ish, pictured above) that are now high on my wish list: brightly colored dotted and gridded notebooks (I want them so badly!), a 'to do' list with spaces for hour-by-hour appointments and a checklist, a note pad of board game score cards, and big bold animal flash cards. A big, unexpected plus was encountering the Scojo eyewear booth. Being a graduate student who has up to 500 pages of reading to do per week, I have recently realized I need to get some reading glasses to save my eyesight from quickly going down the tubes. The MoMA Store just recently started carrying Scojo's "gel" readers (not sold online)--reading glasses with flexible sides that prevent the dreaded "glasses headache". I tried on the gels and several other styles but finally ended up buying a set of tortoise shell rectangular frames. They are the perfect combination of stylish and practical. Plus the vendor, who was an absolute sweetheart, confided that there are a lot of 'A-listers' who wear Scojo! Reasonable pricing, practical and cool: a win-win-win! Check out Scojo here.
