KELLY'S CHAPEL OF COLOR AND LIGHT

I have always lovedEllsworth Kelly's work (see here!) but what if his work actually became a truly immersive experience? It turns out that Kelly recently gave the Blanton Museum of Art, in Austin, Texas, the plans for a chapel he designed in 1968. Although the chapel was commissioned by a private collector, the building was never built and the Blanton is now in talks to (hopefully!) conceive the structure itself, a la the Rothko Chapel in Houston. Like his work, the 2,175 foot stone space would be all about abstraction, color and light with geometric stained glass windows in three different chancels. THE COLORFUL WORLD OF EMILY RICKARD

The lovely Melanie of You Are My Fave wrote an amazing post today about buying abstract art and the impressive artists she has been eyeing recently. Among the talented ladies in that list, I spotted the work of Emily Rickard and boom! A light bulb went off! 

I stumbled across Emily's work some time ago and bookmarked it to either buy, share, or ogle in the future. Somehow her gorgeous pieces fell to the bottom of my 'to do pile' however and never made it on here to share with you . . . at least until today! The works above are from her Etsy shop and, as giclee prints, are insanely well priced at $32 each. Awesome, right?

MIX IT UP

How ridiculously amazing are these high speed photographs by Alberto Seveso? They capture the very instant two colors of ink drop into water and swirl around to combine in a vibrant vortex. Incredible, right?


Apparently he has done a series with black ink too, but I can't imagine it. I am far too enamored with the way the colors coil around each other. It's brilliant!

Having been up to an ungodly hour writing for the past several nights, my mental faculties today are pretty much shot. But I can think of no better way to reboot than to stare longingly at the glorious paintings of Michelle Armas (who I have written about here), which are now on sale at Anthropologie. Cue gasps of delight!

AB FAB: ABSTRACT AERIALS AND SAUCY STATIONERY

I have mentioned before how much I love the new flash sale site Fab.com. Love! About 1/3 of my holiday presents were actually purchased from them. But I couldn't resist sharing two of the amazing sales they are offering this week. First off, the gorgeous abstract aerial landscape photography taken by Denver-based duo Brent and Sarah. These super saturated prints (bright colors! my favorite!) are being sold in an 18 x 18 inch size for the very reasonable price of $70. What's not to love?!

WILLEM DE KOONING AT MOMA

       




       


Yesterday a unprecedentedly major retrospective of Willem de Kooning's artwork opened at the Museum of Modern Art. If you are not a crazy art history nerd like I am, de Kooning is a famous mid-century abstract expressionist painter who worked in New York and pretty much revolutionized painting as we know it for several decades. So basically an exhibition of this magnitude—which is the first to show the true breadth of the artist's work, as it progressed over nearly forty years—is a big deal!

I have already been scoping out the lovely website that MoMA has created to accompany the exhibition while I try to figure out when I can sneak away and see the show. Would do you think? Do you like de Kooning's work? Will you go see the show? Or buy the huge tome of a catalogue?

CIRCLES, SQUARES AND SEQUENCE . . . OH MY!

I discovered this cool stop motion animation by designer and art director Juliana Goodman and thought it would be a bright way to welcome the weekend. Hope you like it!

KATHERINE SANDOZ

Yesterday, when I discovered Katherine Sandoz's abstract paintings I nearly fell off my chair. Stunning! Sandoz's 'Waterway' series, depicted above, features brilliant swaths of color that allude to an aquatic landscape without literally depicting it. Each of these small pieces (about 7.5 inches square) are painted in water-based media on birch panels and are priced at about $1000.

ABSTRACTIONS IN THE CITY

Last week I went up on my rooftop with the BF since the fog + sunset was creating this beautiful atmospheric glow all along the horizon. I ended up snapping about 50 of these cityscape "abstractions". Having just spent 7 months organizing the Georgia O'Keeffe: Abstraction show at the Whitney, I was very happy to have an opportunity to try out some abstractions of my own!
