ENGINEER PRINT INSPIRATION

by austin rhee for photojojoI got an email announcement from Photojojo recently (my favorite) announcing they are now offering limited edition engineer prints taken by professional artists. How gorgeous is this shot from Austin Rhee? (And only $35!) What are engineer prints you ask? Basically they are big, inexpensive prints created at copy centers with a streaky black and white effect. And they are all the rage right now!I started thinking about all the cool things people have done with engineer prints . . .

IMPOSSIBLE!

Hold the phone. Photojojo just released some new Impossible Project instant camera film that has my eyes going wide. We know the Impossible Project has been the saviors of the Polaroid film industry for several years now, but they just released something even more exciting (at least for me): film with round borders! Image a truly vignetted portrait in polaroid form! I can't wait to get my hands on these beauties. If you can't either, check out the new instant film offerings at Photojojo here.
(Polaroid nerd like me? You'll like these posts too.)

MALKOVICH, OH MY!

How funny is this project? Undertaken by photographer Sandro Miller, it features a restaging of countless historical photographs that have inspired him over the years with one important twist—the subject is now actor John Malkovich! Hilarious! As a history of photography nerd and someone who appreciates silly humor, this series had me smiling ear to ear.

Check out the whole project (and more) here.

BLACK, WHITE AND GLITTERY

black white gold round up

As winter starts to insinuate itself here in New York and a new year sets in, I find myself itching for things that keep it simple and get the job done. Though I have a perpetual love affair with any- and everything bright and colorful, there is something about January that makes me want to reach for that one chic and subtle failsafe in my closet (or cabinet!) that I know will always look great. More often than not, that surefire option involves black and white, gold and/or geometric pattern.

So here is a tidy little round up of things that are both lust list-worthy, practical and timeless. Perfect for a housewarming gift, Valentine's Day present, or just because!

1 /////  Yoshimoto Cube, MoMA Store, $65
2 /////  Lightweight Merino Wool Shawl Black Polka Dot, Virginia Johnson, $13
3 /////  Midas Collection Glassware, Design Within Reach, $42-$70
4 /////  Nylon Stripe Chad Laptop Bag, Kate Spade, $338
5 /////  Gemma Hatch Bowl, Crate & Barrel, $5.95
6 /////  Stephan & Co. Metal Bangle Seven Pack, Madewell, $38*
7 /////  Gold Flecks Tank, Anthropologie, $89.95
8 /////  Pyramid Post Earrings, Madewell, $18*

*Madewell, a new discovery of mine, has the best (and most reasonably priced!) jewelry. I would love (hint, hint) to see either of these things show up on my doorstep sometime.

RYOJI IKEDA: THE TRANSFINITE

RYOKI IKEDA TRANSFINITE

Anyone else excited about Ryoji Ikeda's upcoming exhibition at the Park Avenue Armory? It will be open from May 20 through June 11. Here are the details:

Following critically acclaimed installations by Ernesto Neto and Christian Boltanski, Ryoji Ikeda has been selected by the Armory for its third annual visual art commission in the Wade Thompson Drill Hall. Ikeda creates a visual and sonic environment where visitors are submerged in an extreme illustration of projected and synchronized data. His work uses scale, light, shade, volume, shadow, electronic sounds, and rhythm to flood the senses. In choreographing vast amounts of digital information, Ikeda conjures up a transformative environment in which visitors confront data on a scale that defies comprehension, experiencing the infinite.

CLOCK CONCEPT

I agree with swissmiss: this simple clock concept is awesome!  Each number has an individual case (with independent mechanisms)  so that they can be hung as close or as far apart as you like.  Its sleek autonomous design means you can attach it to any surface you like.  Not to mention the fact that it reads the light in the room and knows when to switch the numbers from black (daytime) to white (nighttime) automatically.  Love it!

BLACK & WHITE & RED ALL OVER . . .

Though things are a little crazy right now (dealing with graduate school, taxes, installing a show at the NAC, keeping up with the obsessive imagist), I thought I would take a minute and share a couple of goodies I have come across recently.  From left to right, top to bottom:
