WHILE AWAY THE HOURS

READING ROUND UP

Right now, in the middle of winter and in the middle of a busy time at work and school, all I can think about is kicking back and taking it easy. Ironically, given the fact that I read for school for hours every night, my ideal lazy afternoon involves a cozy little reading nook where I can cuddle up in a big wing-backed chair with a good book. Add a cup of hot chocolate and you pretty much have heaven.

Here are my picks for all the necessary elements to while away the hours:

comfy chair, $749

pretty pillow, $24

cozy quilt, $450

fantastic novel, $10

What's your favorite lazy afternoon activity?

THE WEDDING FILES: REGISTRY REDUX, BED AND BATH

Today's post is the last in my week-long series on wedding registries. See my first post here, second one here and third one here.

I am obsessed with creating a bedroom and bathroom that is a shangri la of comfort and quality. In fact, I have spent years collecting sheets, towels and comforters to make both rooms feel like heaven. After all, you spend most of your time there, right? That said, bedroom and bathroom essentials should be a major part of your registry and here are my favorite picks.

MEMORY FOAM

May seem like an easy area to skimp, but this memory foam mattress pad transforms an old tired bed into pure bliss. $60 - $100

img6o

A perfect registry splurge, this nail trim headboard is a great for propping yourself up in bed with the sunday paper. $449 - $799

img28o

Simple, sophisticated and chic, these swiss dot shams and comforter cover will look great for years to come. $24 - $139

GARNETT HILL TOWELS

Trust me on this, I have done the field testing: Garnett Hill has the softest, most beautifully colored towels to suit any style and and soothe any skin. I particularly recommend the oversized bath sheets, since they envelope you in warm comfort. $14.50 - $48

WEST ELM SHEETS

Laying on crisp clean sheets goes a long way to creating a good night's sleep. I love the little monogram and stripe detail on these from West Elm. $24.99 - $99.99

SKINNY LAMINX

SKINNY LAMINX

A good throw pillow can do wonders for making a bed look put together and adding a splash of color in a room. The Etsy store Skinny Laminx has some amazing options; I own this "herd" pillow and have been drooling over this drawn dot pillow. $35.70 each.

MARIMEKKO SHOWER CURTAIN

Just as pillows can add some sass and fun to the bedroom, a pretty shower curtain can make a big statement in the bathroom. Marimekko has tons of fun patterns and color combinations. The red/pink colorway is now sold out, but you can get others here. $69

COMPANY STORE COMFORTERS

Lastly, like the cherry or fudge sauce on the top of a sundae, a high quality cozy comforter can totally transform a bed from pleasant to decadent. I have used these Company Store comforters for years and love the fact that you can buy them in different warmth levels to switch out for summer, spring or winter. $87 - $199

How beautiful are these products from the German home design shop heute - schmidt? I love how simple yet fun their fabrics are; I would happily buy each and every pillow, bag and tea towel in their online store. Check out all the goodness for yourself here!

I was flipping through the pages of the West Elm catalogue last night and found myself falling in love with everything. Everything! I swear! And since I can't buy everything (I have a fully furnished apartment after all), I figure I can justify a couple things, namely sheets and pillows. You can never have enough of those!

top to bottom:
hand-blocked diamond pillow cover, $34-$39
stripe edge sheet set, $69-$89
pinstripe pillow covers, $24
stripe sheet set, $19-$99
swiss dot duvet cover and shams, $24-$139

What are you up to this weekend? This afternoon, after I present my dissertation proposal at school, I am headed to California! I will be back here on Tuesday with lots of pictures, but until then have a great one!

ERINDOLLAR

WORK HARD
WORK HARD

I have had this beautiful silkscreen poster, by Etsy shop erindollar, on my wish list for a while. It would be the perfect thing to hang over a desk or in your entryway to inspire you to do your best every day. Today I am presenting at a big conference on the topic of college art museums and I can't think of a better motto to take with me as inspiration.

While checking out the erindollar shop I noticed that they offer some beautiful pillow designs too. That oatmeal colored pennant design is just lovely. Perfect on an oatmeal colored couch like mine.

Check out more of the erindollar offerings—unfortunately the 'work hard' poster is sold out!here.

MINTY FRESH

MINTY FRESH

I read somewhere that apparently the newest trend in fashion is pastels. As you likely know from reading this blog, I prefer a big, bold color to any light and dainty hue, but I can make an exception for mint. Something about it just seems cool, unfussy and sophisticated.

So I thought a little round up all of things 'mint' was in order. Hopefully it will help you start your weekend feeling fresh and clean! Enjoy!

1 ~ monochromatic outfit
2 ~ little geometry pillow
3 ~ swiss alps cushion cover
4 ~ kimono fat wizard watch

I love a store that knows its art history—these patterns from FORMA are based on Russian Constructivism. The result is a great combination of geometry and personality. Who wouldn't love to get a present that looked like that?

The wonderful Australian store Castle was founded in 2008 by Rachel Castle—a woman who boasts branding, designing, writing and much more on her resume. Not to mention she clearly shares my undying love of polka dots!

IKEA NAPKINS

The images in this post make it super long, so I will get right to the point. This past weekend, while visiting my parents in my hometown, I made a pit stop at Ikea. I love wandering through the marketplace and stocking up on pretty little things that will take me years to use up but make me happy to have anyway. On this trip I was super impressed by their selection of striped and patterned bolts of fabric--wouldn't they make great pillows? I also bought a ton of paper napkins, especially blue and white polka dots on the top. Inexpensive solutions to a pretty table or couch: thanks Ikea!

Check out the fabrics here, the napkins here and everything else at Ikea here.

p.s. Was anyone else a little disappointed by everything else in the Ikea catalogue this year? I think a lot of the accessories look great, but the big ticket items seem to be getting more boring, no?

p.p.s. I also bought these, a couple of these, and this. Cute!
