RIFLE AND PAPERLESS POST: A DYNAMIC DUO

Have you seen the new line of cards, invites and announcements by Rifle Paper for Paperless Post? I got an email about their launch recently and immediately burst into a huge smile; I have been a fan of both companies for years and always delighted to see two quality brands team up (like these, for example).

The line features everything related to baby, wedding, moving, parties, graduations, stationery—you name it and you can find it at Paperless Post in all the signature hand-illustrated style of founder Anna Bond. Here are a couple of my favorites:

I also love Rifle designed options that incorporate photos as well, as they really make many of the wedding invites and birth notices seem extra special. And, like nearly all Paperless Post products, you can get them as e-cards or physical paper cards, a nice option if you have some non-tech savvy recipients (snail mail) or last minute invitees (e-vites). Which design is your favorite? Also, don't forget to enter the Uncommon Goods giveaway! One winner will be announced on Monday, so don't delay!

NOW STREAMING: THE COLOR CONDITION

I just stumbled across The Color Condition's website and, I have to say, I am intrigued and delighted. Their scaffolding of colorful streamers—erected at parties, museums and stores alike—reminds me a bit of Confetti System, only on a much bigger scale. I love the idea of defining an outdoor space with a string of brilliantly colored streamers, creating the perfectly festive atmosphere for a garden wedding or backyard bbq this summer.

There is more inspiration to be had at The Color Condition's website; check it out for yourself here.

70TH BIRTHDAY BONANZA: ACTIVITY CENTER

I am a firm believer in having activities at parties. While it is fun to snack, drink and socialize, there is no better way to get a party going than to give all the guests a common goal or task; it's a great conversation starter, allows people who don't know each other to mingle more easily and provides a stellar way to set your event apart from all the countless other cocktail parties people have been attended.

We put together some striped red and white fabric from Ikea and cut it down to roughly five by seven feet. I tacked it over some windows in our house and turned some nearby ceiling spotlights onto the backdrop (if you don't have that option try using standing or table lamps just out of reach of the fabric and turning the flash on your camera on). I then set my dslr on a tripod and attached this handy cord which allowed the photo booth subject to snap their shot at will. Last but not least we pulled together a wacky selection of props, including two chalk board speech bubbles I made for the wedding (cut them out of foam core, spray with chalkboard paint, and edge with washi masking tape), this captain's hat and this lifesaver.
two activities for my Dad's party. One was a photo booth—my favorite party starter. Photo booths are surprisingly easy to set up; with a little prep and some creativity they can look downright professional. Here we bought

The second activity was a multiple choice quiz with fun facts and silly stories about my dad. These varied from the types of cars he had owned, the facial hair he had rocked and the silly things that have gotten him in trouble while traveling (like trying to smuggle a two-day-old tuna sandwich through international customs). I laid the whole thing out in InDesign and printed it on card stock to make it look extra designy, but you could easily do this in Word or another text-editing software. It's a great opportunity to get your guests giggling and your family reminiscing. I tell you, everyone loved it!

Let's keep the party going, shall we? More party posts tomorrow!

Oh, I almost forgot! The best activity you can arrange for a party, in terms of posterity at least, is a guest book. I whipped up this quick little accordion-folding book from this PaperSource kit (I keep a couple on hand, they are quite handy!) and this wrapping paper I had stashed away. I added some of this ribbon to tie it all closed and asked guests write fond memories and sweet notes to my dad throughout the night. It all turned out pretty well, if I do say so myself, and only took ten minutes to put together.

70TH BIRTHDAY BONANZA: DRINK UP!

More updates from the party! As you may recall, we decided on a nautical theme since we were hosting it at our cottage on the Connecticut shoreline.  So most of our decorations played on a color scheme of red, white, navy and sunflower yellow. I had these red and white striped straws with the "bottom's up!" and "cheers!" flags left over from the wedding, but I wanted to jazz them up a little bit and make them more seaworthy for the party. I decided to design some 'signal flags' to add to the straws and use as wine glass labels. I think they came out pretty well, no?

Should you be so inclined, you can download a pdf of my designs here. You can either print both sheets out on sticker paper (like this) and cut the flags out, or you can print the first page (the straw flags) on regular paper and attach them to the straws with double-sided tape.

More fabulous festivities tomorrow!

p.s. I also decided to fancy up the Le Pens I bought with a loop of this chevron red ribbon. Plus it has the bonus advantage of helping you spot loose pen caps at the end of the night!

p.p.s. These scalloped cards make really cute party signs!

There is a new sheriff in town when it comes to making a party festive and exciting: Geronimo! Balloon Troopers. Filing huge balloons (think 36 inches in diameter!) and tying them off with pretty ribbons, garlands, and sparkly streamers, Geronimo! products are pretty much sure to make a big, fabulous impression! Can you imagine having one of these delivered for your birthday? I think I would die from happiness!

You know what makes Geronimo! even better though? Their dreamy studio shots. Everything looks so sweet and festive. And I am so envious of that ribbon collection!

I saw a write up about this absolutely adorable birthday party (designed by Suann of Simple Song for her son Ike's 3rd birthday party) on Kate Headley's blog last fall. Kate is an incredible photographer who specializes in weddings; her expertise in shooting parties is plain from the amazing shots she captured of this awesome party. As you can see the party played off Ike's presidential name with voting booths, campaign buttons, and presidential trivia. So cute!

Needless to say, many of these details would be perfect for a 4th of July party: the roll of tickets, the red and blue pennant flags, the pretty photo booth back drop, etc.

Hope you all have a fabulous fourth . . . I will see you again on Tuesday!

BELATED BIRTHDAY

I have had several nudging requests to share photos from my birthday party two weekends ago. Going through the photos I took from the event, however, I was disappointed by how grainy most of the images were given the low lighting. With a little editing I have managed to salvage a couple shots by switching to black and white. Above you can see some of the table set up: an orange and yellow daffodil centerpiece; a multi-tiered display of animal-cracker topped cupcakes; and another tray of cupcakes with flags that spelled out "happy birthday kaj".

At the last minute I also decided to make tiny little favors for two of my friends who were helping me with set up and clean up. Heading to the MUJI section at MoMA Store I picked up these small stackable storage pots for about $1 each (you can't beat a sale and employee discount!). At home I filled them with different candies---jelly beans and reese's pieces---to create a mini color spectrum. Finally, I topped them off with a small blue label and wrote "thank you!" in my patented block capital lettering. My friends were delighted to receive them and it made me realize that it is really fun to show people you care with a small, sweet, and unexpected gesture.

But I still haven't mentioned the star of the party: the cupcakes! I ended up making 60+ cupcakes despite the fact that there were only going to be 15 people at the party . . . oops! This meant that I acted as the 'cupcake fairy' for a week, giving out cupcakes at school and work. I used three recipes from Martha Stewart's Cupcakes all of which were absolutely delicious and relatively easy to make. After much deliberation I decided to make Devil's Food Chocolate, Chocolate Chip, and Apple Spice (only in the cookbook). Each was topped with either store bought dark chocolate frosting (a girl can only do so much!) or this amazing cream cheese frosting. If you make the cream cheese frosting I highly suggest halving the amount of confectioner's sugar; I used only 2 cups and they were the perfect level of sweetness. Finally, I topped the Devil's Food cupcakes off with non-pareils or dark chocolate shavings, the Chocolate Chip cupcakes with multi-colored sanding sugar, and the Apple Spice cupcakes with rainbow balls and animal crackers. I was pretty proud of the results!
