In reading up on Chiharu's work at Goff + Rosenthal I also discovered the deliciously tactile, vaguely moribund, and all together fabulous work of Ahmed Alsoudani. Also from overseas, Ahmed story is fascinating - he is from Baghdad, escaped to Damascus in 1995 and finally ended up in Maine as a refugee (clearly great fodder for evocative works). Delve deeper into his story here or here (this has a short video interview).
