IKEA CATALOG LAUNCH PARTY

Hi guys, remember me? This week has been jam packed with fun activities which means I have a lot of fun things to tell you and no time to share it. (Catch-22!) First things first, I want to fill you in on a fun event I went to last night: the NYC launch party for Ikea's 2015 catalog!I have been an Ikea fan for as long as I can remember, so I was tickled pink when I got an email from their marketing team asking me to attend a pajama party celebrating their new catalog last night. I had been drooling over sneak peaks of their new PS line, so this seemed liked the perfect opportunity to see some of the goodies in person.

Adorably, they served cocktails made with almond milk and cookies—perfect for a chic slumber party.

And they had professional stylists braiding our hair. My tangled tresses have never looked so cool.

In keeping with the slumber party theme, the pop up space had been styled with various bedroom, closet, and vanity displays from Ikea's new catalog. I really like the new stand alone pieces they were offering: cozy chairs, blanket racks, and adjustable wardrobe bars.

Of course my favorite was the colorful new textiles they are offering; Ikea fabric has been incredible recently! How cute are those orange striped pillowcases and that colored checkered duvet cover? Plus that white standing mirror is fabulous, right?

One of the most inspirational parts of the party was the way it was styled. I loved the groupings of products on large planks of wood; how cool does that photo wall or this group of clocks look?Anyway, I had a great time at the event (thanks Amanda for being my date!). This post was not sponsored by Ikea or anyone; I just had a blast at the party and wanted to share!

VIVA ITALIA!

I have some exciting news to share with you guys: the hubby and I are headed to Italy at the end of the summer! I lived in Italy for a brief time in college and it is probably one of my favorite places on earth. I can't wait to revisit all the beautiful spots I discovered all those years ago and watch my husband see them for the first time. Plus, I can't wait to eats lots and lots of gelato, of course!

So here's a quick visual tour of all the places and activities I am most looking forward to . . .

and last but never least, getting lost in the gorgeous medieval streets of my beloved host city Siena (photo from here)

What do you think? Anything else in Northern Italy I should add to the itinerary? All tips are welcome!

HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY!

Today I am headed up to Vermont to hang with my family for the Fourth of July. Do you have anything fun planned for the holiday weekend? I got in the spirit this week by making a patriotic strawberry rhubarb pie using this tasty recipe. It turned out pretty well, if I do say so myself!I will be back on Tuesday with regular posts and a fun announcement about a big project I have been working on! Until then, Happy Independence Day!Like these photos? See more on my instagram account here.

WORLD CUP STAMPS

Have you been watching the World Cup? As a sports fanatic, I have been watching the games non-stop and was, like all of America, heartbroken to see the USA team lose yesterday. Especially given the heroics of Tim Howard, our stalwart keeper, and the heart and soul the team had demonstrated in getting out of the group of death. But I was always so nervous watching their games (the Portugal match nearly killed me!) that it will be much more relaxing to watch the games from here on out since I am not particularly invested in their outcome (though I do like the Netherlands!).

Anywho, I saw this beautiful project by Maan Design Studio that involves the creation of abstract, patterned stamps in the national colors of all 34 teams in the World Cup and thought it would be fun to share. While it is sort of hard to determine which design accords to which country—since so many flags feature the same primary colors—the linear interplay and minimal visuals still make for a gorgeous result. I particularly love how the project logo has been designed to look like a post office cancelation mark; when you scroll through the stamp images it looks like each one is being cancelled in turn. Very clever!

LOVE ON THE SILL

Before this morning I am not sure I thought it possible to fall in love with a plant store, let alone every plant it has on offer. But the beautiful online shop The Sill may just have made me a believer. I adore its colorful planters (shocking, I know!) and the exquisite variety of succulents they have for sale; I am particularly lusting after their fiddle leaf fig tree, the little yellow 'calvert' succulent, and the white 'jules' succulent. They would make very sweet gifts, don't you think?

JOHN PHILIPPS EMSLIE

You know I love a good map or infographic. Though usually I fall for super modern, minimalist versions I have to say I love these beautiful images from the mid to late 1800s by the British artist John Philips Emslie. I love the rich detail and beautiful coloration, particularly in the 'Telescopic View of the Moon' poster. Gorgeous, right?

A ROUND UP OF WORK ESSENTIALS

Phew, it's been a crazy busy start to the summer—I can't believe it's already almost July! I have now officially come down from the exhaustion (and excitement!) of finishing my first dissertation chapter and am attempting to get back into a normal routine again. I have to say, it's hard. I am feeling the pull of all sorts of creative projects (sewing pillows, picking out artwork, developing new products for the new shop) even as I am trying to stay on track with my schoolwork. With that in mind, I thought it might be cool to share some of the things I use every day to keep myself productive and on track. Join me for a tour around my desk, will you?

one — Last year for about two weeks I tried to pretend that I didn't need a paper planner anymore. I figured, I take my cell phone everywhere and use iCal all the time, I wouldn't use it, right? Ha! the simple act of making to do lists and jotting down weekly appointments in this handsome book helps me feel prepared the face the world, even when everything else seems to be falling apart. moleskine weekly planner, $21.50

two — As a lettering nerd and someone who considers note taking a very serious activity, I am certifiably obsessive about the pens I use. These super thin retractable pens are the absolute best. pilot g-2 extra fine pens, pack of 12 for $17.49

three — Speaking of pens, I have recently discovered the secret to clear, dynamic notes: multiple writing implements! What does that mean, you ask? It means for headers or text I want to emphasize I use a bolder pen and with body text or random notes I use a fine-tipped pen. Since I am obsessed with Pilot Pens, these have become a go to favorite in the bolder variety. pilot vball extra fine point, pack of 12 for $15.99

four — This may be a no brainer, but as I continue researching and writing my dissertation I have found I need to cart documents everywhere. The easiest way to do that has been to use this jump drive, which conveniently and safely stores inside itself and has a ton of memory. sandisk usb drive, 64GB for $29.99

five — Sometimes you just need to work through a thought, jotting some rough ideas down while still leaving enough room on the page to go back and highlight the important parts later. I love this notebook because each sheet is divided into two sections: a main column for normal notes and a smaller side column to mark down key themes or big ideas. Plus the orange cover is cute too! rhodia meeting notebook, $12.23

six — Let's be honest: we all make mistakes. And, if you are like me, most of the time you want to meticulously purge them from your notes. Enter this magic clickable eraser that lasts forever and removes stray marks beautifully. pentel clic eraser, $2.25

seven —You know how, when you are working on a project, you seem to accumulate random information like crazy? At least I know that when I put together a blog post or a paper, I find myself gathering links, images, videos, etc. all in a mishmosh. This internet application helps me save, organize and share all that information and is, basically, a beautifully laid out lifesaver. dropmark, free

eight — Bright colors plus perfectly-sized sticky tabs equal organizational bliss (at least for me!). Since I run through a lot of library books and notations in my line of work, I rely on these pretty puppies to keep my place or my thought. Different colors can represent different ideas or can simply help inject some rainbow love into those boring brown library covers. post-it page flags, 500 for $7

nine — A zero email inbox is pretty much impossible in my life, but at least with this handy application I can boomerang some of the most important messages back to the top when I need them most. Set a coffee date with someone a month away? This service will let you send a reminder (either to yourself or to your friend) on a particular time or date or every week/month/day for those more regular meetings. followupthen, free

ten — We all know that Google has changed the way we use the internet and Gmail has changed the way we chat/email each other, but Google Drive is the real revolutionary force in my life. I use it to store all my dissertation notes, readings, and backup drafts, which I can access anyway online or off. It's awesome! google drive, free for entry level plan

That's it! Now you know all my secrets! What do you think? Any useful tools I missed?
