30 FOR 30: A MAD COOKIE BIRTHDAY PARTY FOR THE AGES

let's get ready to crumble cookie sign

cookie tasting table
Last weekend I threw a 30th birthday party. For myself. It was reasonably epic, thanks in large part to the wonderful turn out (thanks, friends!) and the super fun theme: chocolate chip cookies! And not just any chocolate chip cookies—the party was a 'March Madness' style bracket to determine the best chocolate chip cookies in New York City from among 30 contenders (get it? 30 for 30!). (I was inspired by this lovely lady.)

I ate so many cookies that I had a stomach ache for several hours afterwards. Now if that isn't the sign of a good party, I don't know what is!

In planning the fete I took the opportunity to put together a bunch of fun crafty decorations that I thought you might enjoy. After all, now that I have put the idea in your head you are totally going to go out and throw your own cookie party, right?

I know that these have made the blogger rounds recently, but I couldn't resist sharing these Manjar Sweets cookies with you anyway. My favorites are the Brooklyn and Photography series, but I also love the fact that they will do custom orders—wouldn't that be great as a wedding favor?

CHOCOLATE AND SPRINKLES

CHOCOLATE & SPRINKLES

I am a big baker. If you have been reading this blog for a while, you know that I love eating sweets and love making them even more. But my crazy schedule of late has prevented me from making treats with the regularity I would normally like. Instead I am resorting to collecting recipes and ideas and saving them for later. So here's my list of chocolate inspiration with a dash of sprinkles. Bon appetite!

ONE | Favorite Chocolate Chip Cookies, Tender Crumb
TWO | Cake Batter Rice Crispy Treats, Give Me Some Oven
THREE | Chocolate Peanut Butter Surprise Cookies, Big Flavors from a Tiny Kitchen
FOUR | Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Waffles, Bonnie the Baker
FIVE | Best Chocolate Ice Cream You'll Ever Have, A Cup of Jo
SIX | Pudding Cups, Room for Dessert
SEVEN | Chewy Chocolate Gingerbread Cookies, Martha Stewart
EIGHT | Sprinkle Shots, unknown author
NINE | Super Duper Chocolate Kisses, Better Homes & Gardens

MARTHA STEWART COOKIES

I recently received Martha Stewart's Cookies for my birthday, a dangerously delicious cookbook dedicated only to Martha's best cookie recipes.  I can't wait until exams are over so I can try some recipes out!  Until then, I have been distracting myself by looking at her 'Cookie of the Day' on her website (I have included some of my favorite examples above).

Buy her cookbook here or get a daily recipe for free here.

TASTY TREAT: HOMEMADE ICE CREAM SANDWICHES

What are you up to this weekend? I am laying low and stuffing myself with these fabulous confections. Last night I went to an art history trivia party with some friends (I know, nerd alert!) and offered to bring dessert. On a whim I decided to whip these bad boys up and they were a big hit! I completely made up the 'recipe' so feel free to play with it as you will.

Chocolate Chip Cookie Ice Cream Sandwiches with Nutella and Chocolate-Covered Pretzel Bits

2 dozen chewy chocolate chip cookies (you can make these or buy them at the store)
1 gallon of vanilla ice cream
1 jar of Nutella
assorted toppings (I used dark chocolate sprinkles and ground up chocolate covered pretzels)

These couldn't be easier! Basically take two chocolate cookies, put 1/2 tablespoon (or more to taste, ha!) of nutella on the bottom of one cookie and then add a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream on top of that. Put the second cookie on top and squish the ice cream down to make it more sandwich-like. Finally roll the side of the sandwich into a low bowl of sprinkles or crushed up chocolate covered pretzels or mini oreo pieces or whatever other crazy things your brilliant mind can come up with. Stack them in a tupperware container and store in the freezer until you are ready to eat them (just don't store them on their sides as all the toppings will fall off—learned that the hard way). Now go eat up!

Have a great weekend, friends!

70TH BIRTHDAY BONANZA: FAVORS AND TREATS

Are you sick of hearing about my dad's party yet? I hope not, because this is the last post (I swear)! It sounds silly but I think every good birthday party, for a celebrant of any age, should come with a goody bag or favor. I know it seems like kid's stuff, but if you choose the right gift it can really delight your guests and be a fun way to round out the party's theme.

Since we were playing off all things oceanic for this party, I decided to make all the guests monkey's fist key chains. Like most large-scale DIY projects, it took a solid weekend+ to tie and assemble 40 of these suckers, but if you do it while sitting outside, chatting with a friend, or watching a movie the time flies. The bonus is that the knot looks super professional even though it is relatively simple. It took some trial and error to get the hang of it, but using this tutorial, I was a pro in no time. The key is—which the tutorial doesn't highlight enough—the tightening phase which requires concentration and some attention to detail. My best tip for tightening is to visualize the knot in your head as three distinct sets of loops placed in different directions, ordered in the number you created them (first loops, done vertically, are #1; second loops, done horizontally around the first set, are #2; third loops, done vertically around set 2 and inside set 1, are #3). When you are tightening, make sure you start the tightening process from the first part of loop #1, the closest to the center of the knot. You can find this by looking at the loops and determining which was the first set and/or by pulling on each loop in turn; if one of them does not consequently pull a loop on an opposing side, that's your center. It sounds weird but, trust me, it will make sense when you are doing it.

I finished them off by hooking the extra cord around some some brass key rings and then sewing that loop closed with embroidery thread (tie a knot in the thread, stitch it through both ends of the cord near the monkey's fist and then wrap the thread around numerous times, covering the raw cord end and threading the needle under the wrapped thread to tie it off). To ensure the thread stayed put, I coated the whole wrapped section in this anti-fray treatment. Worked like a charm.

To ensure maximum cuteness, I used map pins to hang the finished keychains on a cork board that I painted white and blue with acrylic craft paint. I am pretty proud of the result, if I do say so myself.

As for treats, I wrote about the cake last week but forgot to tell you about the cookies! I found this sugar cookie recipe on Pinterest where the cookies look like sand dollars and I thought it would be a perfect and tasty addition to our theme. Luckily, I am happy to report that the recipe is simple (though it takes a while to lay out those almond slivers) and extremely delicious. They didn't last more than five minutes at the party and that was while people were also chowing down on cake!

Check out the recipe here.

We're done! I am finally putting this seventieth birthday bonanza to rest! Feel free to wrote a note in the comments if you have any questions, suggestions or general thoughts. It's always fun to hear what you have to say! Back to regular posts again tomorrow.

OH MY BLONDE!

Link

I am completely in awe of the new blog called Blonde Designs. Run by two Martha Stewart veterans (duh! Look at those cookies!), their ideas are fabulous, their designs are bright and fresh and their blog is inspirational. Check it out here, and thank the lovely lady behind inchmark for introducing us to the blondes here.

UP, UP AND AWAY . . .

Tomorrow I leave for a week-long hiatus in Italia!  I am going to visit my dear friend and beloved travel buddy Nathan (who has been in Italy for the past year on a Fulbright Fellowship).  He and I studied abroad in Siena, a small town we will be revisiting for the biggest event of the year: Palio!  I will do my best to do a post or two, but am not making any promises.

Here's what I have to look forward to:

Hope you all have a fabulous week!

THE WEDDING FILES: REGISTRY REDUX, KITCHEN

I am back after a fabulous, relaxing weekend with my favorite ladies. Just what I needed with less than two weeks left until the wedding! Eek!

Speaking of weddings, I thought it would be fun, over the next couple of days, to put together a guide to wedding registries. These will be my favorite picks for practical, beautiful, and fun wedding gifts that the happy couple will use for years to come. Without further ado, here is a list of the best wedding gifts for the kitchen, all cherry-picked from my favorite culinary superstore Sur La Table.

TOOL SET

Perfect for a wedding shower gift or a multi-part gift, these Joseph & Joseph tools are pretty and practical. $49.95

FOOD PROCESSOR

This 14-cup food processor from Cuisinart has been a work horse in my mother's kitchen for twenty years. It can do pretty much anything, so for $199 it is a bargain.

BAKING PANS

Everyone needs a good baking dish or two. This set covers all your bases, from bread loaves to cupcakes. $149

STAND MIXER

Just like the food processor, a Kitchenaid stand mixer will last your entire life and will repay its investment time and time again. So bring on the cookies, cakes, and baked good batters get a group of friends together to buy them this beauty. $349

GRIDDLE GRILL PAN

Doing double duty, this brilliant pan has both a griddle and grill surface that fits right over your stovetop burners, making Sunday morning  breakfasts (read: pancakes and bacon!) a cinch. $60

FRENCH OVEN

Get them a beautiful Le Creuset french oven. It's always a hit, because they last forever, come in amazing colors, and can tackle everything from a casserole to a saute dish. $305

KNIFE SET

When in doubt, stick with practical. Even grooms will appreciate this badass Wusthof seven piece knife set, and it will be put to good use in every meal. What more can you ask for from a gift? $150

ROASTING PAN

While less frequent in the cooking rotation, I am totally in love with this roasting pan. Perfect for your first holiday feast together! $200

PASTRY BOARD

Also a bit less frequently used but no less beautiful or practical, this marble pastry board, not only works on pies and pastries but would also double as a lovely cheeseboard or serving plate. A good engagement party gift, no? Particularly if you paired with a pretty pie plate or rolling pin. $40

FRENCH PRESS

I don't drink coffee but even I know that this Bodum chambourd french press makes some damn fine tasting brew. We figured it was a good space saver if you didn't want a coffee pot hogging precious counter space and registered for one to soothe or coffee-crazed parents. $30 - $60 (depending on size)

That's all for today! Stick around for other registry-oriented posts on table and serveware, electronics, and homegoods later this week!

TIPS FOR THE BEST VALENTINE'S CARE PACKAGE

I have a secret super power. No, it's not laser vision or the ability to fly—though that would be awesome—it's the power to put together a kick-butt care package. What's that you say? That's not worthy enough to merit super hero status? I believe my friends and family would beg to differ. In this era of instant, impersonal digital communication, nothing beats getting a good ol' care package (summer camp style) from a loved one full of goodies.

If you are interested in joining me in super hero status with your dearly beloved, click through to learn my tips and tricks . . . .

GOOD THINGS: WEEKEND RECAP

Hi friends! How are you? How was your weekend? I had a lovely weekend and am happy to report that this week is shaping up to be pretty good too! If it's cool with you, I would like to gush a little bit about some fun things that have happened recently.

On Saturday I found out that Refinery29—the amazing fashion and lifestyle website—did a fabulous feature on our wedding! You may remember the post Martha Stewart Weddings did about it in February; being included on Refinery29 too is a dream come true!

The hubby and I also spent the weekend in Durham, North Carolina for the wedding of two very dear friends. We spent hours and hours wandering through the lush Sarah P. Duke Gardens on the Duke University campus. It's in full spring bloom right now and was spectacularly fragrantly floral.

The wedding itself, of course, was beautiful. Set in the Duke Gardens, it was blessed with beautiful weather, great company, tasty food and gorgeous decorations. Plus an adorably happy couple! Congrats Susie and Curt!

Thankfully we also had an incredibly easy return trip to New York that culminated in this breathtaking view of Manhattan as we began the descent into LaGuardia. It felt like we were in a helicopter filming a panoramic movie shot! Definitely the coolest airplane landing I have ever experienced!Last but not least I got a lot of great professional news this weekend too! I found out my sis-in-law just got offered an insanely prestigious position for next year. I can't tell you the details but let's just say that she is one smart cookie! Congrats Kate! Also I just found out that I have been selected to co-curate two exhibitions through this program next year (with one of my best friends!). As a budding curator-to-be I am very excited for this incredible opportunity to show off my skills and get some experience under my belt. Can't wait to get started! So, all in all, things are good on my front. I hope they are with you too. I have a major school deadline in the next two weeks—a chapter draft of my dissertation is due at the end of the month—so please bear with me if I am a little radio silent for a while. I will just be working hard and staying happy; that's all you can ask for, right?

BEHIND THE SCENES: THE (NOT SO) SECRET LIFE OF THE OBSESSIVE IMAGIST

I had a little panic attack this morning when I opened my computer and saw the date. December 12th! What?!! How are we halfway through December already? I feel like 2015 is stalking us like a lion in the Serengeti. Wasn't it only yesterday that we were preparing for Halloween?

All of this panic sent me into the typical tizzy of an a classic overachiever, leaving me thinking, what have I done with myself over all this time? Well, it turns out that when time flies is usually not because you are having fun, but because you are busy as all get out. This fall, while not making as much progress on my dissertation as I would like, I still managed to submit several (labor intensive) fellowship applications, write essays for a professor's amazing new book, interview two very cool artists for my dissertation research (this guy and this lady!), help curate this show and put together its catalog and probably some other things I can't remember. So, you know what, dear readers, let's all take a moment every once in a while to give ourselves a break! We work hard. We get things done. And though you may never check off all the items on your 'to do list' in one day/week/month, you are still making a difference. You are still moving forward (just keep swimming!). And that's what matters.

Don't you feel better now about 2014 winding down?

But, I do realize that this blog is supposed to be about art and design and eye candy and not so much about me blathering on about work. So here are a couple of instagram shots I took this fall of fun things I did to take my mind off of the stress of school/work/life. Hope you like them!

above | Over Thanksgiving I checked out the newly renovated Harvard Art Museums. The building is beautiful. The collection is amazing. The conservation studio is to die for. I highly recommend you head over there yourself.

Plus they have a crazy awesome organization system for pigments and restoration materials. It took all my strength not to break into this private room and drool all over those gorgeous cabinets and rainbow colors . . .

above | I like to relieve stress by baking. For Thanksgiving I made apple pie and cheddar sage biscuits. They were tasty. That is all.

above | Last week I had the privilege of doing a little side project under the guise of my calligraphy business: The Wright Hand. I promised not to spill the beans about the client's identity (Sorry!) but let's just say that I addressed 400 beautiful holiday cards for a luxury beauty company.*

not pictured but still cool! | In other random crafty news, I am also hosting a holiday crafting event tomorrow at the wonderful Jo Malone store on Bleecker Street! We will be making holiday baubles from 12pm - 6pm. Stop on by and see me!

above | My fabulous family friend, Andrew*, set me up with some sweet tech recently (hooray for new computers!) and as I thank you I used the opportunity to send over a little holiday care package (tips for making your own here). I somehow managed to resist eating all the goodies—including chocolate peanut butter fudge and chocolate chip cookies with sea salt—before sending them off. Heroic restraint, I know.

And that's pretty much it! I am looking forward to some serious Christmas celebrations in the coming weeks and kicking 2015 off right. In the meantime, no more debbie downer stuff.

As always, you can follow all my exploits on Instagram here. I would love to follow you too, so drop me a line with your info and I will get on it! Until then, Happy Friday and Happy Holidays!
